About us

We are the Flare Quartet, consisting of Dutch violinists Linde van de Ven and Maartje Rosmulder, Gabriel Torner Alsina (viola) from Spain and Laurence Gaudreau (cello) from Canada.

We combine our love for contemporary and newly written music with the great masterpieces written for string quartet. Through our diverse programs, we hope to bring people together to share our love for timeless string quartet music.

Our quartet started during the COVID pandemic, while we were all studying at the Conservatory of Utrecht. Ever since we’ve been playing together with a lot of joy. As four very different musicians we are always looking for new ways to explore our playing, inspiring not only each other, but hopefully also our listeners.

We aim to play both contemporary written music and the great classics, and combine these to present them to our audience in a fresh and accessible way. We especially love working together with young and promising composers like Sem Hak and Peter Davis, to give their music a stage. Playing these compositions and working together with composers is a way of conveying something of ourselves and the current world to our audience. In 2025 we recorded our first recording, a new piece by Sem Hak, which will be released around September.

Next to this, we frequently collaborate with artists outside of the classical world like Phoria, Praam en Liliane Chlela, something we will continue this year with a collaboration with Colombian singer Lido Pimienta at the LeGuessWho? Festival 2025. We are currently part of the Netherlands String Quartet Academy, led by Marc Danel, receiving coaching from Lukas Hagen (Hagen Quartett), Emmanuel Francois (Quatuor Van Kuijk), and members of the Danel Quartet. Next to this, we took part in masterclasses from renowned chamber musicians including Gregor Sigl (Artemis Quartet), Sebastian Koloski (Utrecht String Quartet), Daniel Rowland, and the Prazak Quartet.

Over the last years we have performed at many different venues both inside and outside the Netherlands, like the Concertgebouw, TivoliVredenburg, Ancienne Belgique, Paradiso Tolhuistuin, and the Vondelpark Openluchttheater. We have played at festivals like Gaudeamus, Le Guess Who?, the International Chamber Music Festival Utrecht, and the Melkweg Film Festival.

Linde van de Ven

Linde van de Ven started playing the violin at a young age, and soon developed a passion for string quartet playing. Her first string quartet experience was with the ZoLiSaSa quartet, at age 7. After playing in different string quartets, as both a violin player and a viola player, she now plays in the Flare Quartet.

Linde studied violin with Peter Brunt, Lis Perry and Chris Duindam at the Conservatory of Utrecht, and with Ana Comesaña in Madrid. During her studies she played in the Ricciotti Ensemble, where she played music everywhere and for everyone, especially for people who don’t normally encounter (classical) live music. This is still one of her main reasons for making music
